Ted Hughes translates and adapts Lorca's 20th-century classic for an English-speaking audience. The story is based on a newspaper fragment which told of a family vendetta, where the daughter of one family ran away with the son of the enemy family. Hughes's captivating version premiered at the Young Vic Theatre, London, in September 1996.

Sophie Duguet--young, successful, and happily married--thought at first she was becoming absentminded when she started misplacing her mail and forgetting where she'd parked her car the night before. But then, as her husband and colleagues pointed out with increasing frustration, she began forgetting things she'd said and done, too. And when she was detained by the police for shoplifting, a crime she didn't remember committing, the confusion and blackouts that had begun to plague her took on a more sinister cast. Her marriage started to come apart at the seams. Now Sophie is in much deeper water: the young boy she nannies is dead while in her care, a tragedy of which she has no memory. Afraid for her sanity and of what the police will do to her when the body is discovered, Sophie goes on the run, changing her identity and appearance to evade the law. Forced to lead a very different kind of life, one on the margins of society, Sophie wonders where everything went wrong. Still, with a new name and a new life, she hopes that she'll be able to put her demons to rest for good. It soon becomes clear, however, that the real nightmare has only just begun . . .

Newly repackaged, three plays by Federico García Lorca In these three plays, Federico García Lorca's acknowledged masterpieces, he searched for a contemporary mode of tragedy and reminded his audience that dramatic poetry--or poetic drama--depends less on formal convention that on an elemental, radical outlook on human life. His images are beautiful and exact, but until now no translator had ever been able to make his characters speak unaffectedly on the American stage. Michael Dewell of the National Repertory Theatre and Carmen Zapata of the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts have created these versions expressly for the stage. The results, both performable and readable, have been thoroughly revised for this edition, which has an introduction by Christopher Maurer, the general editor of the Complete Poetical Works of García Lorca.

Written in 1932, this is the first of Lorca’s “rural trilogy” and tells the story of a couple drawn irresistibly together in the face of an arranged marriage. This tragic and poetic play is the work on which Lorca's international reputation was founded. Blood Wedding is about a bride who, on her wedding day, elopes to the forest with a previous lover, Leonardo, who was linked to the killing of her new father-in-law. Hunted down in the forest, the groom and Leonardo fight and both are killed. The bride emerges from the forest, her dress stained with blood, and, we guess, on her way to be sacrificed for her sins. It is a poetic and highly symbolic play, with the frequent allusion to orange blossoms representing the sanctity of wedding vows, and the azahar flower symbolizing virginity. As with his other plays, Blood Wedding considers the restrictions placed on the individual by society; the Bride must curb her love for another man because an arrangement has been made for a marriage for her. Methuen Student Editions are expertly annotated texts of a wide range of plays from the modern and classic repertoires. As well as the complete text of the play itself, the volume contains a chronology of the playwright's life and work; an introduction giving the background to the play; a discussion of the various interpretations; notes on individual words and phrases in the text; and photographs from stage productions.
