Few thoroughfares offer as rich a history as Louisiana's River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In this third edition of her extremely popular guide, Along the River Road, Mary Ann Sternberg provides a revised introduction, new images, and updated information on sites and attractions as well as tales and local lore about favorite and overlooked destinations. Featuring background information about the area and a detailed guided tour -- upriver on the east bank and downriver along the west -- the book gives an overview of the River Road, serving as an accessible and definitive companion to exploring the corridor. Sternberg's abiding appreciation of the area's allure, garnered over twenty years, produces a must-have travel companion to a place that far exceeds its common reputation as only a parade of elegant antebellum mansions. In this new edition, she again encourages travelers to experience the many treasures of this wondrous byway for themselves, so they too can see how much it has changed over the past decade.

Death and the law in a small South Carolina town. It's springtime in 1978 and Elizabeth Chase, a young public defender from Boston, returns to her ancestral home of Weenee, South Carolina, to attend the funeral services for her grandfather. But when the county sheriff pulls a severed head from the bottom of the Weenee River, Elizabeth becomes involved in the most shocking homicide the small town has ever seen. Reluctantly, Elizabeth agrees to defend the African-American man accused of the gruesome murder. It isn't long before she starts to realize that nothing in Weenee-from a new romance to the eccentrics who drink bourbon in the afternoons-is what it seems. Evocatively set in the rural South, this suspenseful and realistic novel draws upon the author's own experiences as a public defense attorney and judge in a small town to probe themes ranging from racial tension and voodoo to drug trafficking and revenge.

River Road by Suzanne Johnson is the fun, fast-paced second book in the Sentinels of New Orleans, a series of urban fantasy novels filled with wizards, mermen and pirates. These novels are perfect for readers of paranormal fiction and "fans of Charlaine Harris and Cat Adams" (Booklist) and RT Bookreviews agrees that "for readers missing Sookie Stackhouse, this series may be right up your alley." Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there's more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator. Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ's undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two. It's anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues. After spending a year in prison, Ralph has explicit plans for his first night of freedom: tonight, someone will be held accountable. He goes to murderous lengths to learn the address of his former wife – the woman he blames for his fate. Determined to bring her to his idea of justice, Ralph’s next step is to travel from Florida to Ohio to find his ex-wife’s house on Mad River Road. Also in Florida, Jamie Kellogg wakes from the agonizing nightmare of her mother’s funeral, and assesses her life: she’s a twenty-nine-year-old woman in a dead-end job, with an ex-husband in Atlanta, a married lover in the hospital, and a virtual stranger in her bed. But this stranger is everything the previous men in her life weren’t: tender, attentive, and adventurous. After convincing Jamie to quit her miserable job and ditch her judgmental, perfectionist sister, Ralph proposes a romantic getaway. While Jamie wonders if this thrilling man might finally be her Prince Charming, they plan a road trip to visit his son, who lives with his mother on a street called Mad River Road. As riveting and beguiling as Joy Fielding’s previous novels, Mad River Road is a tale of courage, truth, and the need to trust one’s instincts. From the Hardcover edition.

The prairies are a focal point for momentous events in Canadian history, a place where two visions of Canada have often clashed: Louis Riel, the Manitoba School Question, French language rights, the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, and the dramatic collapse of the Meech Lake Accord when MLA Elijah Harper voted "No." Gerald Friesen believes that it is the responsibility of the historian to "tell local stories in terms and concepts that make plain their intrinsic value and worth, that explain the relationship between the past and the present." For local experiences to have any relevant meaning, they must be put into the context of the wider world. These essays were written for the general reader and the academic historian. They include previously published works (many of them revised and updated) from a wide variety of sources, and new pieces written specifically for River Road, examining aspects of prairie and Manitoba history from many different perspectives. They offer portraits of representatives from different sides of the prairie experience, such as Bob Russell, radical socialist and leader of the 1919 General Strike, and J.H. Riddell, conservative Methodist minister who represented "sane and safe" stewardship in the 1920s and 1930s. They explore the changing relationship between Aboriginal peoples and the "dominant" society, from the prosperous MEtis community that flourished along the Red River in the 19th century (and produced Manitoba's first MEtis premier) to the events that led to the Manitoba Aboriginal Justice Inquiry in the 1980s. Other essays consider new viewpoints of the prairie past, using the perspectives of ethnic and cultural history, women's history, regional history, and labour history to raise questions of interpretation and context. The time frame considered is equally wide-ranging, from the Aboriginal and Red River society to the political arena of current constitutional debates.
